I recently had a conversation with some of my travel colleagues if travel in 2020 is a thing. I wanted to get a wider pulse on how people are traveling and where are they going. I find it helpful to get the inside scoop directly from the people who work at destinations, airlines, hotels, and people who know the industry inside and out. So, what’s the verdict?
Are people really traveling in 2020?
Yes, but it’s at a much smaller scale.
What does travel in 2020 look like?
- Driving over flying: Many trips that we are seeing are still within 1-5 hours of driving distance from home. There’s a slight uptick in people getting on flights, but many are asking us about road trips and amazing hotels close to home
- Road trip over international, although picking up for countries close by
- In the West, we’ve seen increases in interest for the Central Coast, Los Angeles, Sedona, Las Vegas and the national parks
- In the East, many are taking advantage of the beautiful fall foliage and traveling across the New England coast, Charleston and of course, Florida
- For the brave few who are traveling internationally, we have clients traveling to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Costa Rica
- There are only a select few countries who will have us. Below is a snapshot of the updated list of countries open to us. It’s important to note each have their own rules around entry into their country. There’s no one size fits all approach to this!
What about travel in 2021?
Yes. With airlines and hotels destinations offering extended cancellation policies, deals, and travel protections, we’ve seen an increase in bookings for the end of 2021. Most of the trips booked for next year are located in countries that are currently open to the U.S.
I believe that traveling is a personal decision. Only you can decide if you feel safe traveling today or even in 2021. And I also believe it’s completely ok to not be ready to plan to travel at all, too.
Just know whenever you are ready that you always have a trusted travel advisor to turn to for guidance or even a question. I’m always here for you.
